âIâve decided to stop being a bitch,â Honor goes.
This is while weâre passing the famous Obama Plaza.
Iâm like, âReally?â playing the innocent. âThatâs, em, certainly a new deporture for you. I kind of like you being a bitch?â
âWell, I was talking to Erika,â she goes, âand she thinks I should maybe try to be, like, nicer to people?â
âRandom â especially coming from her. She was the biggest bitch in Ireland when we were growing up, and Iâm saying that as a compliment.â
âShe says I could have, like, loads of friends if I was, like, kinder? So Iâm going to try it for the next three weeks.â
Youâre not going to last three weeks in Kerry, I nearly feel like telling her. Iâd be stunned if she lasts a full day. Which is why Iâve decided to stay in Dingle tonight â just so I donât have to drive all the way back down tomorrow to collect her.
âBy the way,â she goes, âwhat happened to your thumb?â because sheâs obviously copped the plaster on it.
Iâm there, âYeah, no, I got bitten by a rat.â
âA rat?â
âItâs a long story. I had to go to the SwiftCare in Balally last night for a tetanus shot.â
âThatâs like, Oh! My God!â
âYeah, no, it definitely was at the time. Hey, the smell of cow shit, Honor, huh? Of course, thatâll be a thing of the past if your old dear has her way!â
Sheâs like, âI donât actually mind the smell?â and all I can do is laugh.
Iâm there, âThatâs because weâre still in technically Tipperary. Wait until we hit actual Kerry. Itâll singe your focking nose hairs â trust me.â
She goes, âI know what youâre thinking, Dad.â
And Iâm like, âOkay, what am I thinking?â
âThat Iâm not going to last a day down here? That Iâm going to ring you tomorrow morning and tell you I want to go home?â
âNot true.â
âSo why have you booked yourself into a guesthouse in Dingle?â
âEr, I havenât?â
âDad, I heard you on the phone. Youâve a lovely voice, Nuala! Yeah, no, Iâm a sucker for a girl with a country accent!â
âThat voice you do when youâre impersonating me is pretty cruel, Honor.â
âI once dated a member of the Mayo womenâs football team and another bird who worked in FBD and was originally from Tubbercurry.â
âOkay, what happened to you being kinder?â
âWeâre not actually there yet?â
âFine, I booked myself into Grangetown Manor because Iâve heard good things. And â yeah, no â also in case you change your mind and you want to come home with me.â
âDad, Iâm not going to change my mind. I donât want to go back to that focking house.â
Yeah, no, that ends up stinging a bit? But I donât say anything and we listen to songs from Honorâs iPhone until weâre in pretty much Abbeyfeale, then I go, âYou are going to miss us, arenât you?â
And sheâs like, âIâll miss the boys. I already miss them?â
âSeriously, you couldnât â focking idiot kids.â
âAnd Iâll probably miss you. A little bit.
